Sport Minister congratulates Judo athlete Christopher George on qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics

May 5, 2016: The Honourable Darryl Smith, Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, extends congratulations to Judo athlete, Christopher George, on qualifying for the Rio Olympics 2016.

George, a 3-time defending national champion competed in Havana, Cuba, at the 2016 Pan American Judo Championships over the weekend and finished in seventh place, which was enough to secure his place in the Rio 2016 Olympics. The 32 year old athlete is the first to represent Trinidad and Tobago at the Olympics in the discipline of Judo.

George represented Trinidad and Tobago in Water Polo at the highest level and was selected as team captain for the national senior team from 2008 to 2011. However, George’s dream has always been to represent Trinidad and Tobago in the sport of Judo at the Rio Olympics in Brazil, in 2016. George, is the seventh athlete to qualify for the Rio Olympics.

 

Minister Smith wishes Christopher George, continued success on his journey to Rio 2016.
