February 12, 2021, Port of Spain: The Ministry of Education extends sincere condolences to the family and friends of Tamika Griffith, a former student of Princes Town West Secondary School. The sixteen (16) year-old Form Four student was fatally shot in the head on Tuesday, after a loaded firearm discharged, while a male relative was showing her the gun.
Officers from the Student Support Services Division of the Ministry of Education have conducted a debriefing session virtually, with fellow students and the parents of the deceased. The Form teacher and the Dean were asked to follow-up on students who may need further intervention.
The school’s administration has also engaged the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) for support if requested by teachers.
The Ministry of Education reiterates the need for proper adult supervision and discussion by parents with their children about safety practices.
