The meeting between CARICOM and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the Venezuela situation will not happen as planned. Prime Minister Dr the Hon Keith Rowley made the announcement today (03.03.2019) at a media briefing.
Dr Rowley, the Honourable Mia Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados and the Honourable Timothy Harris, Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis were expected to meet with Mr Pompeo on Ash Wednesday. The Prime Minister indicated that the US Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago communicated the change late on March 1, 2019.
The meeting with the Secretary of State was originally requested by CARICOM following the regional meeting in Uruguay. Confirmation of the meeting with the Secretary of State was received from Washington last week during a caucus of the 31st CARICOM Inter-sessional meeting.
The Prime Minister said CARICOM and Trinidad and Tobago continue to talk with others on the issue at various levels in pursuit of a peaceful and sustainable outcome and remain open to meeting with the US.
