June 9, 2016: Chief Secretary Orville London is assuring the country that the Tourism Standing Committee won’t be encroaching on the Tobago House of Assembly’s responsibilities regarding Tobago’s tourism.
Yesterday (June 8) at the Office of the Chief Secretary, Administrative Calder Hall, Mr. London said that impression is due to “miscommunication put in the public domain”. He said the committee is just being re-established, having been set up by former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday over a decade ago.
“I just wanted to make sure that the public is aware that one, this is not a committee to oversee tourism in Tobago; it is for the sustainable development of tourism in Trinidad and Tobago,” London explained. “Two, that the committee is really the re-establishment of a standing committee that was first brought into the picture in 2003.
“Thirdly, it is a reasonable response to ensure we get the level of collaboration, of flexibility, and the ability to make quick decisions that are necessary if we are to be as competitive as we should be.”
London confirmed he is on the committee, along with Secretary of Tourism and Transportation, Tracy Davidson-Celestine and THA Chief Administrator Raye Sandy.
