Minister Smith attends 2017 Camp VYBE Graduation Ceremony

August 7, 2017: The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs, Division of Youth hosted Camp VYBE (Vacation Youth Being Empowered) from July 24th to August 04th   2017 at eight venues across Trinidad and Tobago. The theme of this year’s camp, in keeping with the United Nations International Youth Day theme was “Youth Building Peace”. Throughout the duration of the camp, facilitators covered topics such as; Sustainable Peace, Environmental Stability, Social Justice and Conflict Resolution. They also participated in storytelling, agricultural and cultural workshops.

Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, the Honourable Darryl Smith in his brief address to the campers at their graduation on Friday August 4 thanked them for being a part of Camp VYBE 2017. He also thanked the facilitators and volunteers for dedicating their time and resources to the youth of Basilon Street and its vicinities and reiterated that he strongly believes that our youth are our greatest resource. He also urged them to take the lessons that they learnt throughout the camp and apply them to their everyday life, to their schools and to share it with those around them.

Additionally, he stated that 2017 has been one of the most successful years for sport in Trinidad and Tobago thus far and urged the youths to channel their energy in which ever discipline they choose and be the best that they can be and represent Trinidad and Tobago to the best of their ability. The Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs remains committed to being a dynamic, service-oriented and policy driven organization that brings all stakeholders together to promote youth development, total participation and excellence in sport.

During his visit, Minister Smith got the opportunity to present tokens and certificates to deserving campers and viewed the crafts and displays that were done over the duration of the camp. He even got his hands dirty with some planting as the campers were encouraged to use our natural resources to aid in environmental sustainability.  

 

Minister Smith plants a tree following the graduation ceremony in keeping with the camp's focus on environmental sustainability and peace within the community.
